Yeah, so for those of you who don't know already, I was born and raised in Michigan. I was actually born in a town called Saginaw, we lovingly refer to as sag nasty. I guess that was the only time Well, besides one other time that George had been up to Michigan, he went to my 30 year class reunion with me. There wasn't a lot to see there in Saginaw. So he wasn't really super excited when my friends from college said, they wanted us to come up for a few days and visit them at the lake in Michigan. Not that they didn't want to see our friends. But I don't know if you're super excited about the whole idea of Michigan.
George
It was fine. I'm down for anything, you know me. But now that I think about it, I think it's been three times that we've been to Michigan when we went through your classroom in Battle Creek for my brother's wedding, and didn't we go to Detroit?
Lisa RichartHernandez
That's right. We did. We took the boys on a rugby trip, we actually went over to Canada on that trip. Both right? Yeah, we didn't spend a lot of time but we did do Detroit and Ann Arbor. So you got to see that. And we did take the boys to the Lakeshore and I showed them like, this is fresh water. But not really not really getting to see a lot of the really beautiful places in Michigan that there are.
George
And that's why we went back. So let's, let's kick it off.

So first things first, we started, it's about a 16 hour drive to the southern part of Michigan where we were headed first. And so I love to do our harvest host. And when we have like a boondocking night well, instead of like trying to find a campground if I could find a cool harvest hose, then I get excited about it. And so this year we went to it was right outside of Columbus, Ohio. It was called outer belt brewing. And it was a really great harvest Host.
George
Yeah, I really enjoyed it. And as the driver and you guys know by now that I always speak as the driver, I always want to make sure that we can get in and out easily. And one of the things that I really appreciated about this harvest host, they had pictures of exactly where the parking spaces were. And then I would the address I was able to Google Earth and make sure that everything was was good. Because once you pull them with a 40 foot RV, it's not like you can just do a u turn and get out.

Yeah, yeah. And the whoever was that sent me that managed the harvest, I was part of it. Like they sent me a text message with a diagram of where we were going to park and the biggest thing for harvest hosts that I've found is just read the reviews, you know, especially if you have a big rig like if you've got a smaller like C class or whatever. You don't have as much of a challenge as parking in a lot of these places. But you know, we are 40 feet plus towing the jeep. So we've got to pay attention to kind of where we're going. And and so this one was great and even had electric hookups. 10 bucks,
George
yeah, one of the three spots had electric hookup and it was first come first serve. And we happen to be the first ones there. I think we were actually the only ones there that night. So they had one spot behind the brewery, one on the side of the brewery and then one in the front parking lot. That's the one we took with the electric hookup. And that worked great. And, you know, we were stumbling distance from the brewery.

Yeah, it was literally right outside the front door of the brewery and it was a Friday night so they had live music and they had pool tables and darts and we had great food pizza and I can't remember whatever else we ate but all the food was really surprisingly very good pizza. Pizza beer was great.
George
Beer was fantastic. Yeah, yeah.

If you don't know about harvest house, I don't know. I guess I've talked about it in some other podcasts but you pay $99 A year and it's kind of like boondocking all over the country. I mean, they have like 1000s of places that you can stay at. So they have a part of their app, you can say, like where your destination is, and then it will show you all of the things along that route. So I kind of said, Okay, we're, you know, we want to be about like, you know, nine or 10 hours the first day, we wanted to get a lot under our belt that day. And George hates those long driving days. But we got a lot out in that way on Saturday when we woke up. We only had about four more hours till we got to Michigan. Yeah, it just broke
George
up the trip really nicely. And the thing with harvest host is they have golf courses, vineyard vineyards, breweries, and our farms now,
Lisa RichartHernandez
yeah, all kinds of stuff. And now our harvest has comes with boondockers. Also, which is another membership type thing, same thing. So it's even sometimes like people's like farmland or houses or whatever they
George
got. Yeah, wherever you can park it that people allow you to do it.

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Pretty cool. So we enjoyed our se at harvest house. That was our first night. And then we headed up to Lake shamong. Outdoor Resort. A spa that ch E. U Ng, I think I'm pronouncing it right.
George

But it was a nice little. I don't want to call it a campground because it definitely was on a campground. It was like 5050 It was like a mobile home RV Resort. Kind of Yeah, a bit of eat. It had a lot of park models, which are if you don't know what a park model is, it's like really, like it's not like a trailer, like a single wide kind of trailer. Not like that. But like a smaller, almost like a tiny house. Yeah. Right.
George
Yeah. I guess it's a cross between a trailer house and tiny house. Yeah. And there were there were a lot of those. So I would that's why I said it was probably 5050 RV spots. And
Lisa RichartHernandez
yeah, so I think there was like owners in there. Oh, absolutely. Yeah. And then I mean, there was a ton of kids and they had a really nice pool look like indoor outdoor. We didn't ever really go swimming in the pool. But I mean, there was tons of families and kids there. Then they had a little putt golf. It was gated. And it was all corners. You right across the street with the golf course.
George
Yeah. The place was huge. And they had a little beach on the so it's located on a lake.

Yeah, it was really clear water and a nice sandy beach.
George

So we definitely enjoyed it. Now, our friends did not stay at the same resort. They stayed in an Airbnb, I think it was called Lake Howell like very close to there. So it's literally like five minutes. If you're not familiar with Michigan, Minnesota is the land of 10,000 Lakes because Michigan has more. So there's a lake everywhere you go in Michigan. But anyways, we we spent most of our time at that other lake, but it's a good stopping point. If you want to see places in Southern Michigan, Detroit and Arbor, Kalamazoo kind of it's kind of like right in the middle of the state. So worked out.

Yeah. I think it was an hour from Detroit.

Yeah, about an hour from Detroit like an hour and a half from Kalamazoo. So kind of half and half. Yes. Yep. So the good thing about that is we got to enjoy our time with our friends and my see my friends from college, I went to Western Michigan University. So actually high school friends, we grew up together, Robin and Amy and then we had a friend from Charleston come up to Christine and their kids and rented a pontoon boat and time,
George
be with the friends and get out on the water and get a break from the heat. Yes, it was actually cool enough at night that we had a campfire a couple times. Yeah. So that was really nice.

Yeah, if you want to go on a vacation in Michigan, August is the perfect time. Well, but plan ahead, because everywhere I was trying to get was booked up. So we went from Lake shamong up to Mackinaw City to go to macaron Island. And I don't think I could have even gotten any more than two nights there. I kind of had to move around a little bit some some of the different places that we went because August is apparently the month to go all the people from Florida and South Carolina and Georgia and we're going to get out of the heat goes up to Michigan and it was beautiful up there.
George
Yeah, it was beautiful and the temperature was perfect.

Yeah, we got so we got to stop in Midland on the way up to Mackinac Island and see my aunt Marcia and Uncle Bob. Well, Uncle Bob didn't make it out. But my cousin Madeline, so I was happy to see them in Midland. And
George

Oh yeah, I got a brand new roofing hat shout out to Brandon roofing. Hey, Jeff bought that. So that was a great that was great that that's the only family I've got left in in Michigan anymore aside from, you know, my friends from school and stuff, but other than that I don't really have any reason purposely to go up there to visit family. They all migrated south. Got my mom's in Charleston. Yeah. So let's talk about Mackinaw City. That was our second stop on the trip. And we stayed there for two nights. And if you're not familiar with Michigan, Mackinaw City is on the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, which is like the very tip of the mitten, you know, Michigan shaped like a hand. Then the Mackinac Bridge connects Makena or the lower peninsula to the Upper Peninsula. And b to the UPA Yeah, my Michigan accent did come out a little bit. Well, yes, a lot. Yeah. And so
George
I really enjoyed Mackinaw City that it was really a cute little town. There was a lot of stuff to do. We went to what was that hotdog place Winterlicious wiener delicious. They really were delicious.

As a gigantic hotdog, all the talk when you go to macro, so you'd be like, Oh, I got that from the podcast. Winterlicious. So we with a que away was nice, like, I mean, a que away. One thing about staying at que aways, things I love about them. They're easy to book online, it's easy to find your places. And they've always got like a certain standard level of, you know, good sized pads. Yeah,
George
they're very consistent. That's why I liked them. That's why

Yeah, they're not the most fancy thing. They got a lot of things for kids to do and stuff. So the cool thing sheplers ferry, you they had discounted tickets for the ferry to Mackinac Island there and the shuttle and the shuttle would pick you up right there, which was great. So if you didn't have a tow vehicle, you wouldn't need one. You could just take the shuttle but then you also didn't have to worry about parking at the, you know, to get on the shuttle or anything like that. I mean, I'm sorry, not the shuttle the ferry, you took the shuttle to the ferry. Right. And so they made that very easy. We just walked up when we were ready to go. They called the shuttle they came within like 1015 minutes, drove over to the ferry terminal and and we went over to Mac and all.
George
That was my was that my first real sighting of the water?
Lisa RichartHernandez
No, no, the first night we got there. So the first night we wrote out on our new E bikes, which I've got to tell you the I could have stayed for way more days and checked out all their bike trails that are around there. Apparently they have like, the bike we the first night we rode our E bikes on the trail they told us about into Mackinaw City from the K

away. Yeah, and that was only like 10 minutes if that yeah, like

10 minutes, a bike ride. And a beautiful one was like, you know, paved and trees. And that's brought us right to Winterlicious. And then we went there download Main Street, and all around the waterfront. And I mean, the water was just gorgeous. Like Georgia was really surprised at how crystal clear the water was.
George
Yeah, it's to me, I grew up in New York. And I've lived on the East Coast my whole life. So to me, a big body of water is an ocean and a lake. Like all the lakes that I went to ever were kind of dark and murky and some weren't clear. You could see the bottom but it was still dark. And I don't want to say nasty but murky. And then all sudden we walk up to this lake and it's like, the frickin Caribbean is beautiful blue turquoise water and soot crystal clear. I mean, you can see straight to the bottom. It just really sent me for a loop.

Yeah, yeah. So we enjoyed our time there. We stopped at the Dixie saloon. And we were just going to stop him for wondering, you know, the famous last words. Yeah, I wasn't a huge fan of the food at the Dixie saloon. But the bartender was great. The service was really nice. Like we've made friends and we ended up staying there for like four hours, make friends wherever we go. We have live music, right when you get off the ferry from shopping from sheplers. So it's kind of a tourist route. But the all people we met there were locals. They all lived in Micronauts.
George
Yeah, it was it was a fun bar. We had a great time. Yeah, yep. So

there's a lot of different things. Tons of breweries in Michigan. They're everywhere, like

so there's three things that there's a ton of admission for things in Michigan breweries, ice cream shops, fudge. And dispensaries. They're everywhere to Oh,

yeah, that's right. Marijuana. recreational marijuana is legal in Michigan. Yep. So but one thing I like about like, this is kind of funny, but all the dispensaries looked so like chic. Like almost like a spa. Fine that wasn't like, you know get your weed here. It was literally like, Oh, what's that? Oh, it's looks like a pretty build. It's a cannabis doesn't they
George
all had like cool names. Yeah, you know what I mean? It was a good play on words. But let's continue on

but anyways, okay, so enough about marijuana. What were we talking about?

oh yeah brewery the four things he said there was a bunch of everywhere. Yep. So there were a lot of breweries there. We didn't we only went to the Dixie saloon. We didn't have much more time than that. But because the next morning we were getting up to go to macro Island. Yes. And

so we got up the next morning, got picked up by the shuttle, take them down to the ferry and we took the ferry over to Mac and island. The ferry ride was actually really cool. Just again, to me to be in such a large body of water and it's not an ocean is it was blowing my mind. But just to see, you know, as you're arriving onto Mackinac Island, it's hard to describe because it's absolutely beautiful, but it's almost like a step back in time. Because as soon as you get to the Merino you you start seeing all the carriages and all the horses and all the and you do start smelling all horses. Yeah, not

like fudging horse poop. Yeah, that's a backward Island. Yeah, but you're right. And oh, I forgot to mention. I was so excited to bring our E bikes to Makran Island when we bought them. I was like, we have to get these before we go to Mac at all. Because I knew that Mackinac Island is a big place. You just ride your bike all over. There's no cars you're gonna write you know, there's horse and buggy everywhere, but everyone rents bikes. So it's like, oh, we're gonna ride these things everywhere. It's gonna be great. Hold on. We got to Mackinaw City we found out that E bikes are not allowed on Mackinac Island.
George
All motorized vehicles are banned from magnet Island. Yeah, so include any bikes.
Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah. And and like ours have a throttle. I guess there's different classes of you bikes also. But supposedly, if you have some sort of quote unquote, handicap, you can bring your eBike and they're not allowed to technically I guess because of HIPAA. ask you what your disability is that you need to ride your eBike. Right.
George
So that I think a bunch of people found a loophole.

Yeah. And I'm more of a rule follower than

it would have been nice to have. But Rules are made for reason. And we are rule followers. Although Yeah, but we digress. Yeah, that was get to the beautiful island, get off the ferry. And everything is horse drawn. The taxi is a horse drawn carriage. The shuttle to the hotel is a horse drawn carriage UPS Amazon delivered on a horse drawn carriage which was really, I should have taken a picture of that. I don't know why I didn't. But that was really cool. Yeah, that

was cool. So we kind of really didn't know where to start at Mackinac Island. And we saw this beautiful carriage with his, like, really cool. Like the lady was dressed in like this like, like a

bluebird carriage drivers. With a top hat.

Yeah, with a top hat, like so cool. And we're like, oh, you know what, let's go ahead and go up to the Grand Hotel. I wanted to show Georgia Grand Hotel and I wanted to go sit out on the porch and, you know, have a drink and overlook the water, which is so beautiful. And if you don't know what the Grand Hotel is, it's this gigantic hotel that was built in the

1887 1887 because I soak in all the information, data

and information. Yeah. And so it's apparently no two rooms are decorated the same. And I'm pretty sure that they've taken all the wallpaper from the 1980s that was Waverly wallpaper with flowers, gaudy flowers, stars, clouds, all kinds of doubt. But you definitely need to see this. So it was seven or $8 a person to ride in the carriage up to the Grand Hotel. Yes. And then once we got in there, I was like, oh go in now like Oh, it's $10 entry fee,

so per miles per person.

So we had to pay 20 bucks to go in and just kind of wander around. And we checked out all the little restaurant bar kind of things and we sat and had a really great Bloody Mary and sliders and sliders and truffle fries fries. So the food was excellent and the drink was excellent. But to Bloody Marys, a slot through sliders and some truffle fries was almost $100
George
I think it was Over $100 with a tip. Yeah. So,

if you're looking for a bargain, that is not your place to stop, but

if you're looking for a beautiful atmosphere and something different to do, and you can't go to Mackinac Island and not go to the Grand Hotel, I mean, it's like the the grandest thing on the island.
Lisa RichartHernandez
It really is the kind of thing the Grand Hotel. So apparently after six o'clock, which we were there during the daytime, men have to wear a jacket and women cannot wear pants. So keep that in mind. Also, if you're visiting the island. If you're not dressed appropriately, you can't go there in the evenings, but we walked out on that porch and there's all the I mean, one thing I just cannot get over is the beautiful flowers. Everywhere we went in Michigan. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I must have taken like 1000 victims of just flowers while we were there. Like, you just couldn't capture how beautiful it was. And like American flags, and it just it felt so almost all American like with flowers and eggs. And I was gonna

say before when I was talking about the ferry ride, to me, it was almost like a Norman Rockwell.

Yes. That's perfect description of it. Yeah.

I could see that being one of his paintings. Yeah, America, all American kind of

one thing that I we was going on, like we had already had our Bloody Marys. And we're kind of just still just walking around. And we're, you know, but we didn't want to eat any more drink any more. They were having high tea. And it was so cute. Because there's like little families and they had like the, like, actual tea and like tea cakes and finger sandwich sandwiches and the little desserts. And they served them on these like little three tiered trays. And there was a harp playing, you know, music and just the whole atmosphere was
George
just really cool. Again, like I said before, it was almost like stepping back in time. They have kept the tradition going. Yeah. And yeah. Good job on their part to continue that tradition. I thought it was beautiful. And I wish we would have done it. Put it that way.

Yeah. So then we walked downhill which I recommend if you're going to, you know, do the little carriage guy, get that down there then ride up the hill and walk back down much easier. So we walked down the hill. And just started kind of at the beginning of is in Main Street. I don't know what the street name is, but it's kind of like the low Main Street.
George
Yeah. And it's, it's you'll know it's the only main street the Main Street on Magan Island. And that's where all the shops are the restaurants and the 99 Fudge shops, and probably three or four breweries and but it was beautiful again, it was quaint and old and no motorized vehicles. Yes, all these horses everywhere.

We had to stop and get our 5g we got Revis fudge. We first thought okay, we're gonna do like a tech talk about all the different kinds of fudge on macaron Island. And then we got to there were like a result. There's way too many fudge places we'd be eating fudge all day long. There's at least five I think five different kinds of companies. Oh my god, at least five. And when we say like Main Street, we're talking about like one block like 10 blocks at the very most Oh time blocks. There is a fudge shop like every third door is a fun shot right here's where so the fudge was delicious and creamy. And we did days does that but we did not go overboard and go to every single well thank God that that would be an option for somebody that's really into fudge. Definitely. It's funny because everywhere you go in Michigan, they'll be like, Oh, this is makin Island fudge. Like it's
George
supposed to be about fudge. Oh, and it was funny because we were we had a hard time narrowing down which one we wanted to try because everybody's display on the window was world's best. Voted best followed by you know, they found somebody to vote. So yeah, kinda reminded me of the elf or the guys like, that's the world's best coffee. Yes, yes, that's true. But it was delicious and thoroughly enjoyed it. Then we walked. Not we did the carriage towards the

carriage tour. Were one of the last characters the day it was at like five o'clock. Took us all away all around the island. That was that was nice.

Learned a lot about the island and what went on there.

Yeah, whenever we go to like someplace like that, like we live in Charleston, South Carolina. We have horse and carriage tours there. I always tell people just do that. It's like one hour and they tell you everything you need to know in a short period of time and that's kind of how the Mackinac Island one was, but I think our tour was like two and a half hours long.
George
Yeah, it was a rather long being horsedrawn and it was interesting and realize, you know, it was a for a military fort for the British and several battles took place on there. And there's there is still a fort there that we got to the fort at all. We never know we don't make it or disappointed. But it's a beautiful tour. And like Lisa said, you get the lowdown on the island. And
Lisa RichartHernandez
well worth it. One of the most interesting things, of all the things that they told us on the tour was how many I think when somebody asked how many people live on the island, I think they said like 350 people. So like normative resident permanent residents, like hardly any. And then he said, there's like 350 horses on the island, which was, like the same number of horses on the island as there were people is what I thought was funny. And they said, there's more veterinarians that actually live on the island. Yeah, that work? Yeah. Because of all the big animals. Yeah, taking care of all the horses and stuff was, you know, more than taking care of the people, I guess.
George
Yeah. Well, that's all they use. They better take care of them. Right. Right. Right. So we finished our tour and decided to go check out the pink pony because we were told by everyone that we had to stop by there. And it was really cool. I enjoyed that. The pink ponies broken down. There's a restaurant side. There's I guess there's a hotel. So we were at the hotel, a small boutique, small boutique hotel. We were in the boot in the hotel lobby bar, which was still the pink pony. And then in the back, unfortunately, we didn't get to sit back there because it was packed. But they have a outdoor patio overlooking the marina and it just look beautiful.

And they have live music. There's a bar out there and everything we just were there like the busiest time and we didn't really want to wait for it.
George
Yeah, so we just sat at the lobby bar and had a blast. Yeah, we met
Lisa RichartHernandez
another local error. Like Georgia, and I have never met a stranger I swear. And she was telling us about how she's like lives there and year round. And she's I think, I've just got three kids. She homeschools them. And, you know, they go back and forth to the city if they need things or whatever. Macedon city is just what was the ferry ride about? 20 minutes.
George
Yeah, it's a high speed ferry. They call it a high speed ferry. Yeah, it was no time.
Lisa RichartHernandez
So one thing we didn't get to do, which, you know, when I was planning this trip, I was like, alright, well, one night, we'll just park the RV somewhere and we're gonna go I really wanted to stay on the island at nighttime. I thought we would stay at the Grand Hotel, but it was $1,000 a night. And I was like, I just couldn't pull the trigger on that. I just couldn't do it.
George
Yeah, that's that's a hard one. Yeah, yeah. So

we didn't say if it was a special there was there's other Airbnb not Airbnb is but like, like bed and breakfasts and stuff. But they're all pretty, pretty pricey in August in Michigan. So we just took the very home, but I think that's like when we had to leave to catch the ferry. I was like, this is when when the really fun is going to start out being a big
George
Well, I think if and when we go back, I would definitely stay in one of those boutique hotels. For a couple of nights, one or two nights.

I don't even want two nights.
George
I think too much to do. We can find stuff to do. Yeah, but I think it's a totally different world. I mean, you've done it. Yeah, I think it's a totally different world once all the tourists leave.

Yeah, yeah. So well, we really enjoyed that. Trips to the island and the next morning we woke up and we were on our way up to the Upper Peninsula.

Yes. And we got to cross the

Mackinac Bridge,
George
Mackinac Bridge, which everybody that I talked to was like, Oh my God, be careful. It's really bad. And if it's windy
Lisa RichartHernandez
weather Yeah, like they will shut it down for big vehicles like our motor coach and trucks.
George
Yeah, we'll try trucks. Top speed limit is 40 miles an hour, regardless. And if it's really windy, they have to be escorted across the bridge. That's how that's how bad it is. And supposedly if it gets really really windy, they'll just shut the bridge down until the win passes. But it's the longest suspension bridge in
Lisa RichartHernandez
the United States. No. I don't know how long bridge that's a

long bridge. But I know it's the longest bridge but I don't want to say the wrong thing.

So I even growing up in Michigan had never been to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. again. And so when I was talking to some friends, and I've been in South Carolina for 30 years, so, you know, so many things have changed anyways, you know, it's asking some friends up in Michigan like, hey, you know, where are the, you know, must see places that we need to go to. And one of those was pictured rocks in the Upper Peninsula, and it is in Munich thing. And so I had to call like, 12 different or replaces to even get a reservation because it was a weekend we were coming in. And so we stayed at the pictured rocks, RV park and Christmas, Michigan, which is a fairly new RV park and had just, you know, really leveled gravel lots, not a lot of trees. Not a lot of shade. Because we did a tech talk while we were there. And probably like 30 people commented Ivan Varghese when I was up there snowmobiling and so, the first day we got there, we had our pro geese, no pasties,

sorry, I get that. Yeah, it's it's such a pervert. So they're so what it what it is, is there's all different flavors like beef or chicken or whatever. Like, maybe there was like world's best paid pasties here, stop here. So we finally chose a place and stopped.

mean, they're county roads. So they're, they're maintained. They're groomed. And in the winter, they're even groomed. And the one guy at Fog is was telling us that there's over 300 miles of trails just in that area.

Yeah, you can go like from city to city, like all the way up to just all the way along that coast, what's what's all the way up at the top of Northwestern Michigan is all the way up there.

So this sounded great, because if you've listened to our other podcast, when we were in the Redwood Forest in California, we did the Smith River, an all day thing. And six hours, six hours and we loved it. Then we did on we loved it so much there that when we went to Moab, Utah, we did the Colorado River, six hours, six hours, no problem. Now,

here's where the problem comes in. River we just river rivers flow. Lakes do not flow. This was a much different experience for six hours of actual kayaking.

Yeah, no, we in Pleasant got the wind, it was gonna rain that day, we had to pack our own lunch. And we did, we did our a little cooler, they gave you a dry bag and stuff. And it was two people in a kayak. So we didn't each have our own, which normally when we went on our other kayaking things, we each have our own little kayak. So this was kind of a big heavy kayak for two people. And then we had our lunches and everything all packed in there. And then it had like, you know, that thing to keep the water out that goes around or like a skirt. And so we started paddling and we're like, holy crap. Like, if you let go, like you could be going the wrong way. Like, you gotta keep on paddling. There's no like, oh, the current will take us give it a rest for a minute. No, like six hours. We freaking pedal for six hours. Yeah, except for the one hour that we stopped eat our lunch.

Yeah. And a couple of times he stopped so that he could talk to us about the painted rocks and the arch. And what was that lover's kissing tunnel or whatever, kissing

rock? I mean, it was absolutely gorgeous. So the pictured rocks are like, like a shear. Well, sort of all different, like rocks that just drop like a cliff into the lake. And it's like it's crystal walk clear water. So it's like water sort of shooting out of some of the rocks and just kind of like waterfalls and it's just

well and part of the name painted rock is because pictured rock is because this one particular area. There's so many different variations of rock in the cliff, including iron, which iron Russ and you get this rust color, almost dripping down the wall of the cliff. Then you have the white limestone and you have just so many different colors. And unfortunately the day we did it, it wasn't a really sunny day. Even our tour guide was like on a sunny day. This is completely different. It's so beautiful. You're getting the gist of it. But you know, it's you're not getting the full show.

Yeah. And I mean the waters like the Caribbean. I mean it was like that blue that

yeah, and super clear. Well, he actually took us to an old shipwreck that was 100 years old. And it was in 20 Something feet of water and I got it with my GoPro like if it was a in a bathtub, yeah, yeah, it was. Which, by the way, I did take my GoPro for the six hours. And at the beginning we're so pumped up and zero rally. Yeah, this is so much fun. By the end of the six hours, it was like, kept me the hell out of this canoe.

Yeah, I mean, it was like seven miles of paddling. And that was when without a current was a lot. So I'm not gonna lie when we were all like when we were there, we finally got to where we were going. I was like, Oh, look, there's the boat. We didn't take. Yeah, it goes all the way out of there. And I guess the boat ride is like an hour. Yeah. So I mean, we paddled for like three for three to four hours before we got to our final destination. And then we came back.

Yes, because they go slower getting to to the turnaround spot because they're describing everything. And we took breaks to go in some little caves. And so that's why it took longer to get back. But getting back was like, Okay, get ready, because we're gonna paddle and we're gonna get back and

yeah, so I don't want to discourage you like, Oh, don't go it's don't do it. Because that was probably one of the highlights of the picture rock was doing the kayaking. But if you're going to do the whole, I mean, there were three hours there's there's way shorter kayaking, things you could have done. so that was Uncle duckies pedal tours. And then fogies was the name of the bar that we loved that everybody went to and then you can cook your own steak at your own steak. And then so we had to go back over the Mackinac Bridge again to get back down to the lower peninsula. And we were heading to Pataskala, Michigan next, which is where hearthside Luxury RV resort was. So very different from totally different from the KLA and very different from the pictured rocks RV park that we wouldn't do also, it was hearthside is owner lots very similar to what it's like in Hilton Head Island motorcoach resort, where we own we own our place here and view properties. My brokerage is the preferred broker chair. So we sell a lot of RV lot. So it's interesting to me and I always want to talk to the other realtors that these other places because a lot of people that own an illness at Island motorcoach resort, also own up in Michigan at hearthside. And some other places just around the country. So funny because we ran in when we pulled in, right as we go in, I was like, Oh my God, there's that brivo And the white Corvette that we had seen, falls, which is in North Carolina. So from the people that we've met, a lot of people go down and down to South Florida in the winter, it might have placed down in Naples or whatever, and then sort of migrate their way back up to Michigan and in the summer, where it's hot, and then go back down. So kind of a perfect lifestyle. I guess if if you can afford to do all that.

Yeah. And the place was beautiful.

I mean, gorgeous. When I say the flowers of Michigan were so pretty. You just add the lush landscaping that's there. I mean, the soft green grass, and there's water features and ponds everywhere. And yeah, but

incredible. Incredible. I mean, we're audible. So the cool thing about hearthside is they let you have casinos. So the little core coach house they call it so some of them are really small, like 400 square feet, like basically just have like a bathroom and maybe a pullout couch or something like that if you had a guest on the little loft, and they would let you sleep in there. Yeah, so um, had like a little law so kids, put them out there or whatever. And then we made friends with a realtor there. And we were looking at a couple of different ones and he's like, I thought nobody's in this million dollar one. Can we? Can we go see what it looks like inside. And wow, it was beautiful.

Yeah, he made a phone call and the owners were there and they were gracious enough to ask a 1.5 million. Oh, that was the one. That's right. That's right. Yeah. The one you're right.

It was like 1000 square feet like Coach house. And then they had a little one car garage with it. And then, you know, they parked our motorcoach, which I believe was a primo, which if you aren't familiar with RVs those are like, used ones that are 20 years old started at like a million, or like the rock star vans. Bus rock star bus. And you know, I said, Where are you moving to like, her like, Oh, we love this place. And they originally came were from Florida and they they they spent they spend he said May through October in Michigan. Yeah, and that task area

and their place was so beautiful. I mean, they did such a beautiful job with the core with the with everything, everything was just incredible. It was

like all glass and all the doors could open up like when the weather was nicer. And there's like water features outside and I mean a whole huge like kitchen bar like area that can be opened or closed and that was a really pretty

Yeah, and again, I think the developers did a great job with I would say 80 to 90% of the lots had some kind of water feature whether it was a manmade stream or lake or whatever, but they almost all of them had something some some kind of water feature. And it was just I was very very impressed with their landscaping and their layout and the lot we stayed in was just gorgeous gorgeous.

He said the the lot that we stayed on and I think that we paid like 180 bucks a night because it was like a premier lot or whatever. Officially glamping at that point when you have like glass rocks in your firepit further like massive fire it was like the biggest fire outdoors feature thing that I've really probably ever seen. So yeah, keep talking prices in the in that resort started out I want to say there were some that had like nothing on them for like around 150 And they went all the way up to 1.5 million. So we did not spend very much time in buttowski which disappoints me. We walked around for a little bit but the two days that we were there, it poured torrential rain. And I said well that's typical Michigan and we couldn't not have rain. It was just kind of reminded me how I always remember Michigan have like rainy days. But petacchi Podolski is like the one of the one of the areas to go vacation. If you live in Michigan. There's tons of money up there. We're looking at the real estate stuff. And, of course, I'm always curious about real estate. I'm like, Oh, my God, like, this is the lake house for $4 million. When? I mean, we don't barely have those on ocean front and Charleston. So everything's in perspective and definitely beautiful harbor. And did we go to any restaurant? We went to one restaurant right by the resort to the steakhouse. And that was really good. Last sportsbar. Yeah.

Which was a really weird combo. One side was really elegant Steakhouse, and the other side was a sports bar. But it was cool. Yeah, it was very good. Yeah, very good.

Yeah, just like five minutes away. So like, I had recommended that we go there. And then oh, we cooked at home on the grill the next night? Because I wanted to cook.

Yeah, yeah. Which was the first time that we cooked in the whole trip.

I know because we love we're foodies. We love to go try different things. But it was just cool to enjoy our time there. We rode our bikes everywhere around and we really enjoyed that and saw the resort inside the resort. And then so it finally cleared out up. And the next day we loved and we were driving back down to South Haven, because we needed to start making our way back down south. And we stopped on the way. It's kind of out of the way, but we went on the way to Sleeping Bear sand dunes. And that was that was another kind of a big stop for us on that trip.

Yes, and I'm glad we did it. And it was it was kind of confusing where the parking was where the park started where the park ended. And we kind of past where I wanted to park. And we ended up in this little town that had a welcome center. And we parked there and took the Jeep into the actual Park which I'm glad we did because the road was

yes, that's where I wanted to, to to park because like I said earlier in the podcast, I Google Earth, everything. So I can make sure that I'm not getting myself into a bad situation. And that was the parking lot that we passed. I didn't even realize that we had passed it. But there is a parking lot in the area where you can climb the Sleeping Bear dune. And they in there, they have several RV spots, I would say about 10 of them. And you go do your thing. And then you leave. Well, we missed that one. And I'm glad because we found a great parking space got in the jeep and drove up to the top of Sleeping Bear Dunes. And yeah, it was unbelievable. So

it's funny because I hadn't been to Sleeping Bear sand dunes, since I was like a little kid really. So you know, I couldn't really I was like, I know, there's a place where you can stand on the top of the dunes. And I've seen the pictures, but I don't know how to get there. And so it was like $25 per car to get into the thing. You could buy the tickets at the Visitor Center or get them at the gate. So we didn't even need to go all the way to the gate. And then you get in there and there's like 10 stops or something like that. There was 12 Scenic Stops. Yeah. So you go to these little scenic polls, and I was like, Oh my God, are we ever going to see the dunes? Please, God, don't tell me I just brought Dora Dolly. Oh, we're never gonna see these dunes I've been talking about. But it was like the last stop was where you go to where you're like, where are you park? It's like, you'll see the there was probably the most amount of cars there. Yeah. And we got out of the Jeep and walked up. And then you kind of walk up a little sandy Park. And then you're at the top of the dunes. And it says like,

how was said it was $3,000 to rescue you if you get stuck at the bottom of the dune? Because that's how steep it is. And that's how big it is. Like, when you're on top and you look down at the people that actually ventured down the dunes. And there was quite a few of them. They look like ants. They look tiny. Yeah. And when you see it's like a treacherous climb. Yeah, when you see them climbing back, it looks like they're on their hands there. But they look like they're on their hands and knees. But they're not. It's just that it's that steep that they can actually actually use their hands as they're climbing. Yeah. And there was a lot of people struggling,

I came up with a business plan. That should be a boat that because there were boats at the bottom, you can see how clear the water was at the bottom. And I would say you know, let the people walk down the take the boat, bring it back to shore somewhere where they don't have to live that travel where? I don't know. Well, we when we on our way there we drove through Glen arbor. And one of the things again, if I had more time, I was really disappointed. They have all these incredible bike trails. I remember all the bikers everywhere, and we could have written for hours and miles and miles on these beautiful bike trails that go all through all these like little towns around the Sleeping Bear Dunes. You could see a ton of people were doing that. Actually,

not Ann Arbor Glen arbor. And there was like people sitting outside at the restaurants and all I mean tons of bicycles parked everywhere. So yes, we definitely time I would definitely try to spend some more time there if we weren't in such a whirlwind trip,

but we made the best of it and enjoyed it and took a million pictures and videos. And yeah, it was a sight to see. And again for me. When you're standing on top of a dune looking at a massive body of water, you're wondering what ocean is this?

I mean, the water was so blue. It looked like we were somewhere like in the Bahamas or something. It was gorgeous

that there was a sailboat at the bottom of the doom in the water, obviously. But the sun was out. And it was one of those pictures where the sailboat looked like it was just floating on air because you could see the shadow underneath the water. And that's how clear it was. I mean, it was just unbelievable.

Yeah, yeah. So we enjoyed that for sure. Let's see. And then we were on our way to South Haven.

So South Haven is where ice go. I went to Western Michigan University, which isn't located in Kalamazoo. It's the southern southwestern corner of Michigan. So South Haven was the beach that we went to if we were going to go to the beach from Kalamazoo is about 45 minutes drive inland to Kalamazoo from from South Haven. And we stayed at Sunnybrook RV Resort there. And I think that was a great location. It was like straight down, like four miles or something to the beachfront.

Yeah, yeah. It was a great location, great little park.

And so the first night we we walked down, and I think it was like a Monday. So the guy said, a lot of things are closed on Mondays because we're short staffed everywhere. Like I don't even understand what the short staffing thing. But, I mean, we went to what was the name of the we're gonna go to the Eiler, which is a super old boat. And it's like, I don't know how long that thing's been floating there. But it was like a restaurant and bar on the water. But it was closed because it was Monday. So we went to another one that was right there. In the water on the harbor. It'd be a great place to go and sit on the actual beach and pick pack a picnic and watch the sunset. Because it's a beautiful sunset on that side of the state.

Yeah, we just miss sunset. We couldn't find a parking space quick enough.

Yeah. And so we just ate right there on the water and feed the dogs or don't feed the dogs.

Yeah, it was the food was good. drinks were good. The little town was beautiful.

Yeah. And I wish we could have again spent more time there. We kind of got like the tip of the iceberg of all these things. So we don't have a huge amount of tips to give you about that. On our way back to the the Sunnybrook RV Resort. We saw this ice cream place that there was like, once again, like a million people standing outside

of Oh my god. That's right. With the gigantic ice creams. Yeah, we were standing there trying to figure out what we wanted to get. And I wanted to get a Sunday I just wanted good old fashioned Sunday. And they had one on the menu and this little kid walks by with an ice cream cone on like one of those hot dog paper plates. That little rectangular ones. And this ice cream was huge. It was it had to have been a pint of ice cream. Leaves and he looks at us and he goes on. That's only two scoops. Yeah. I was like, Oh my god. So when ours came out, it was pretty embarrassing. They were ginormous. But of course we did proceed to eat every single last bite because it was delicious. Yeah, that was that was real ice cream. That's not yogurt. That's not

Yeah, full fat. It was called Sherman's Dairy Bar. And up here, everyone was outside apparently used to be able to eat inside. But after COVID they just closed down the inside. And I mean, there was there's probably 50 people standing outside. Yeah. Families is eating ice cream. And there's also a place called Three blondes blue brewing, which was just like, a mile away from there. But you definitely want to have a tow vehicle if you go there because the guy told me it's not really that easy to get an Uber really anywhere. Yeah. So we did have to, we did have to drive our jeep.

think I think it was Admiral Jack's bar and roll that we went to and so they've been on that

Yep. So that was so that was fun. The very first night we got there and then the next day said it well you know what, what do you want to do? by our friends that we visited, you know, previously, the week before they live in Kalamazoo. And I said, you know, do you want to go check out Western Michigan University? I haven't been there in 25 years. Holy smokes. So we decided to go to saga talk Michigan, not Saginaw saga tuck, which is on the west coast. Again, another cute little town. You can just wander around to the shops, and, you know, they had some antique shops, and it was on the water again. They had like a little ferry controller back and forth. Remember that thing?
George
Oh, yes. One of the oldest really hand crank chain ferries. I think it's one of the one of if not the last existing in the United States. And that was pretty cool. You can see the guys cranking the handle and you can actually see the chain comes up from under the water and it pulls them across and then it sinks back down. And that was pretty interesting.

Yeah. And we had we had a lunch there and just kind of wandered around. And then we took our drive, which is about 45 minutes over to Kalamazoo

Yeah, all these little towns that we stopped and were great for like a day trip. And just enjoy it and it's quaint there quaint or old.

Everything there's like, beautiful flowers, like every corner has like flowers hanging from a pot like everywhere. You know, again,
